The city’s population is 206 000 people.

Water Treatment Station "Balakovo Vodokanal" supplies drinking water to the city. The station’s total capacity is 100 000 m3 of water per 24 hours. Water is supplied from the surface source (the Volga river), is filtered and disinfected by liquid chlorine.

In January 2007 12 AQUACHLOR-500 devices with total oxidants producing capacity (in chlorine equivalent) of 144 kg per 24 hours were installed and put into operation.

AQUACHLORs provide disinfection of 23 000 m3 of water per 24 hours. The oxidants solution produced in AQUACHLOR devices is used for initial and second chlorination.

Winner of regional competition

Published 12.02.2008.

"Balakovo Vodokanal" rated first in the regional contest of 2007 as a best housing and communal enterprise among water-supply and wastewater treatment stations.

The enterprise could reach such results due to it’s activities aimed at perfect satisfaction of needs of people, enterprises and organizations in water-supply and wastewater treatment in the necessary volume and of necessary quality. Though It was planned to spend 21.6 million rubles in 2007 on major repairs of facilities, however over 23 million rubles were spent on this purpose. 2,9 km of water-supply lines of 100 to 500 mm in diameter were replaced as well as 0,5 km of wastewater lines of 300 to 900 mm in diameter.

In 2007 the enterprise has also won Contest of Investment Projects realized in Saratov region which allowed to purchase AQUACHLOR devices for drinking water disinfection with the help of 50% budgetary co-financing.

These activities continued in 2008. In January 2008 an agreement on granting of interest-free credit in the amount of 2 million rubles in the context of the regional target program "Energy efficiency of Saratov region" was signed. The other 5 million rubles are planned to be granted in February 2008 in the context of the regional target program "Drinking water". These means will be used for AQUACHLOR devices purchase.

In view of the fact that oxidants solution supply points (which coincide with chlorine water supply points) are located practically at the same height with AQUACHLOR-500 devices and are distant enough from them , concentrated oxidants solution is supplied directly to the chlorination ejector pumps. The obtained chlorine water is then transported to supply points through the existing circuit.

Hydraulic connection of the 12 AQUACHLOR-500 devices to water pressure line is carried out with the help of 3 manifolds each connecting 4 AQ-500 devices. Each manifold is equipped with globe valve, mechanical impurities filter, elector-magnetic valve and reducer (WTS, Balakovo, 2007) Manifold for water supply to 4 AQUCHLOR-500 devices Manifold for water supply to 4 AQUCHLOR-500 devices

Pressure in water line till reducers should be not less than 2 bar/cm2, pressure set by reducer should ensure flow of 40-500 liters of water per hour through ejector mixer of AQUACHLOR-500.

In the launching period unrefined rock-salt was used, aqueous solution of this salt was of dirty yellow color. AQUACHLOR-500 devices had to be de-scaled once every 12 hours.

19 AQUACHLOR-500 devices, installed in the building of former chlorination room and former storage of chlorine cylinders, provide a supply of oxidants mixture to the mixer # 2.

Salt of higher quality was used next which allowed to de-scale the devices once per 24 hours. Usage of salt tablets allowed to de-scale the devices once in 3 days.
